Everyone has used a dictionary before; it feels that it was always there, but each word in the dictionary was written in the book. The dictionary has a collection of words and meanings for a one or more specific language. It consists of the definition of the word, usage, entomology, phonetics, translation, origin, and pronunciation. One of the oldest dictionaries was discovered in Ebla, and it is dated 2300 BCE. The dictionaries are created to describe the way languages are used and not tell us how to use the word. Some of the types of a dictionary are specialized dictionaries, defining dictionaries, prescriptive vs. descriptive, dictionaries for natural language processing, Bilingual, advanced learners, visual, satirical, encyclopedic, etc.

Dictionaries are created

Lexicographers are the people who determine the priorities for the inclusion of a word in the dictionary. They are the ones who look at the word’s evidence, create definition, translations, and etymologies. Dictionaries are also called as a lexicon. There are language experts who provide advice on how to pronounce the word and help out in various other things. The words are updated continuously in the dictionary by the language experts and lexicographers.

Samuel Johnson was a writer, essayist, and a poet, he is known for compiling the dictionary which is used in the modern world. In the year 1746, some of the publishers at London felt that there was no compressive record for the language and wanted to write a book which would stabilize the terms that are used in the English language. It is said that Johnson took over eight years to write the dictionary and he was assisted by six others who helped him with various expressions. In the year 1755, the dictionary was published, and it had two volumes and had about 40,000 words.

Many revised, abridged editions were published after the death of Samuel Johnson, and after that, the next compressive dictionary in English was released by the Oxford English Dictionary was completed in the year 1928.

Most Popular English Dictionary:

Today, the Oxford English Dictionary is one of the most popular and widely used English Dictionary in the world. The words are analyzed by accessing a vast database known as the corpora, in this database one can keep track of the words that have emerged recently and also check if that word is gaining or losing popularity.

A word is included in the dictionary if that word is widely used and if you can find the evidence of that word printed on paper. When a new language is added to an Oxford Dictionary, the speakers of the language are invited, and after some discussions,  the terms are inserted into the book. The lexicographers and the editors work hard to provide the latest updates. The Oxford has a team who are specialized in adding new words and they continually research, analyze and document various terms.
